Sue Wheeler's Adventures at Sea
Itinerary – Asia North Pacific
Ship – Diamond Princess
Length – 16 Days
Total Distance – 5,040 Nautical Miles
(5,800 Statute Miles or 9,334 Kilometers)
Ports – Tianjin, China; Dalian, China; Busan, South Korea; Osaka, Japan; Yokohama, Japan; Whittier, Alaska
From Dalian, China it took a whole day to sail through the Yellow Sea to Busan, South Korea. During our day at sea, my husband, Keith and I relaxed while we read our books and then it was time to get ready for the Captain’s Welcome Party – what a treat! We were served complimentary champagne and we were able to meet the ship’s Senior Officers!
Once we docked in Busan, we had several choices of shore excursions and I must say that Princess does a great job of telling you exactly what to expect on their shore excursions. Below is the top half of my order form for Busan and as you can see – among other things, it tells you how strenuous each activity is, if a meal is included and if there will be an opportunity to shop.
After leaving South Korea, we spent another lovely day at sea as we headed for Japan! We came into Osaka Bay a little before 4 in the morning. By 8am my husband and I were ready for our first shore excursion in Japan. Our first stop was in Nara, which is home to the world’s largest bronze Buddha. As you can see in the picture – it was huge!
Our second stop was in Kyoto. We’re not sure why, but the deer there are so tame you can walk right up to them! We also got to see lots of school children in Kyoto – they were so cute.
We got back to the ship around 7pm which gave us enough time to change, have a nice dinner and then make our way to the Explorer’s Lounge for the Sock Hop! My husband and I both love the oldies, so it was a great way to end the day!
